Government removes work experience requirement for graduate cooks and chefs!

Graduate cooks and chefs will now find it easier to secure permanent residency in Australia.

Certain skilled graduates no longer need two years’ work experience to apply for a regional skilled visa.

This visa is a solution for skilled people who do not satisfy the normal skilled visa requirements.

The old policy required applicants to have 2 years’ work experience… this is no longer needed!

The Courts held that 2 years’ work experience is not required, as it is in conflict with the skills classification authority (ANZSCO: the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations).

As a result, the Department of Immigration removed the work experience requirement.

This makes sense – after all the purpose of the Regional Skilled Visa is to encourage skilled workers to live and work in regional Australia.

The past policy forced these graduates to leave Australia to find work experience, and in the process Australia has been losing many skilled people.

This policy change applies to Skill Level 3 occupations (e.g. cooks and carpenters), with a Certificate IV qualification, who are willing to work in regional area.

We arrange all aspects of your application including securing the sponsorship from a regional authority.

The same logic should apply to many other skill areas, so if you a certificate IV in a level 3 occupation, but do not have 2 years’ of work experience, then you should call us for advice.

The regional skilled visa is a subclass 187 Visa which also referred to as the RSMS (regionals sponsored migration scheme).

This policy change again highlights the importance of engaging a registered and experienced migration lawyer.
