Subclass 188 – significant investor stream

The Significant Investor Visa (SIV) offers a four-year pathway to permanent residency for entrepreneurial and high net worth individuals willing to make substantial complying investments in areas of the Australian economy that will drive innovation and the commercialisation of Australian ideas. A new complying investment framework for the SIV came into effect on 1 July 2015.

Before applying for a Significant Investor Visa (SIV), applicants need to be nominated by a state or territory government or Austrade.

The advantage of state or territory government nomination is the ongoing support provided to SIV investors, including assistance with settlement and connecting investors to support services and local information after arrival

The following are the specific requirements of the Investor stream:

  • You have net assets of at least AUD5 million that are legally acquired, unencumbered, and available to be used to make the complying investment in Australia;
  • You have a genuine and realistic commitment to reside in the state or territory whose government agency nominated you, continue your business and investment activity in Australia after your complying investment matures, and live in Australia for at least 160 cumulative days over the period while holding your provisional visa;
  • You have not been involved in unacceptable business or investment activities.

Subclass 188 – Premium Investor stream

The Premium Investor Visa (PIV) is focussed on attracting a small number of highly talented and entrepreneurial individuals to Australia who can contribute those skills and talents into areas which deliver long-term economic benefit to the country.

The PIV is available at the invitation of the Australian Government only, with potential recipients nominated by Austrade. Unsolicited expressions of interest are not accepted.
