Recent unpublished Immigration Department statistics show that last year nearly 29,000 subclass 457 visas were cancelled – an increase of 45 percent.
The vast majority of these cancellations followed as a result of the visa holder ending their employment with their sponsor.
Although most 457 visa holders understand their visa is tied to their employment, it is easy to be complacent when your visa has an expiry date four years in the future. But if you want to remain in Australia and you suddenly lose your employment, there is often not enough time to secure another visa solution.
The revelation of these figures again highlights the importance of engaging an experienced migration lawyer well before the expiry of your visa. Even if you are on a 457 visa with years remaining, it is never too early to consider your options for permanent residency.
