To be eligible for a skilled visa, the basic rules are:
- You are less than 50 years old (or in some cases less than 45 years old);
- You have a skill on the current Skilled Occupations List (SOL);
- You have recent work experience in this skill;
- You pass the Points Test (see FAQ);
- You meet the set English language, health, character and public interest requirements.
Our FAQs describe how the points test works – click here to go to the relevant FAQ to see how points are calculated.
It should be noted that the points test is often misinterpreted, and you should seek advice from an experienced migration lawyer before assuming you are eligible or not, and to discuss your other visa options.
Skilled professionals have several visa options. Some lead to immediate permanent residency, whilst others involve an initial temporary visa which converts into permanent residency later.
The Australian government will process your visa more quickly and relax the requirements if a State or a Region in Australia sponsors you.

Our initial advice will set out all of your options and will cover the following main issues:
- Which skilled visas you are eligible for, noting:
a. That there are independent skilled visas which are processed slowly but do not have any obligations to live in a particular place;
b. There are a range of sponsored visas which involve being sponsored by a region or state – these visas are processed quickly and have lower eligibility requirements however there are obligations which need to be considered.
- Whether you are eligible for sponsorship (and if so, how this will speed up the process).
- Advising you on the obligations attaching to sponsorship.
- We help you understand the pros and cons of each visa option and identify the visa which best suits your circumstances.
- We also arrange the sponsorship for you.
- How quickly your visa is likely to be granted.
- The best Assessment Authority to go to for your skills assessment.
- An explanation of the Points Test and how to get extra points (which you may not be aware of).
