Visas for Couples

If your partner is an Australian citizen or a permanent resident, then you may be eligible for a couple visa.
Your partner can be either your fiancé(e), spouse or de-facto partner, and can be of the same sex. It is important to get advice about timing issues and bridging visas so that you do not need to be separated from your partner.
The DIAC carefully scrutinise all material lodged. This is why:

  • We are extremely careful in drafting all supporting documents from your family and friends.
  • We take extra time to ensure that the application is prepared professionally and completely.
  • We run through all the different types of evidence that you can use to support your application to ensure it is processed quickly and with minimal fuss.

The categories of couple visas are:

  • Married: you need to give 28 days notice of your intent to marry before you can marry, so make sure you see us at least 5 weeks before your current Australian visa expires. We can help arrange a celebrant and run through the whole process with you.
  • De-facto Couples: generally the relationship needs to be more than 12 months old, although there are exceptions where compassionate circumstances exist (e.g pregnancy). If you relationship is less than 12 months old, then please get advice from us on your visa options.
  • Engaged Couples (Fiancé): this must be lodged offshore and is a 9 month visa, which converts to permanent residency once you are married or have been in a de-facto relationship for 12 months. There is common misconception that you need to marry. In fact a de-facto relationship is enough.
