As of 1st July 2021, the Department of Home Affairs will increase Australian citizenship and most visa application fees. Changes apply from 12:00am, 1 July (Australian Eastern Standard Time).
Citizenship applications
Application fee for citizenship by conferral is rising from $285 to $490, which is an approximate increase of 72%.
The fee for applications for Australian citizenship by descent will also cost 37% more than the previous fee, which will be $315 from the current $230.
Amongst other changes, children aged 15 and younger who are included in a parent’s citizenship application will continue with no fee.
However, a separate citizenship application for a child will be charged at $300, nearly a double from $180.
Although this would be the first increase of citizenship application fees in more than 5 years, Mr Alex Hawke, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs stated that “the cost of citizenship applications remains comparable with other countries.”
In addition, applicants who received Australian citizenship approval will now receive an Australian citizenship certificate instead of an Australian citizenship extract.
