NSW and the Australian Capital Territory are the only two States where working parents on 457 work visas pay fees to send their children to a state school. - Migration Place

The current charges are between $4,500 and $5,500, and there are currently 2,600 children enrolled in NSW public schools, paying fees exceeding $12m.

NSW Minister For Education Adrian Piccoli said that the fees represented “a partial contribution to the cost of the child’s education” and the policy was there to stay.

Some migrants who move to NSW claim that if they had known about the fees and the other high costs of living  in Sydney, then they may have chosen another city.
