Parliament Examines Business Innovation and Investment Program - Migration Place

The Australian Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Migration is examining the Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP).

The BIIP is designed to bring entrepreneurial talent to Australia and diversify business expertise, but the low number of successful applications to date has Parliament concerned. The Joint Committee is now taking submissions on how the program’s uptake can be boosted.

The committee will look at whether the BIIP is meeting its objectives, including:

  • conditions involved in the decline in rates of application for the BIIP, in light of rates of application for the previous Business Skills Program;
  • current eligibility criteria, with particular regard to the operation of the BIIP points test and its effectiveness in selecting suitable migrants;
  • weighing the size of the current program against the emphasis placed on other elements of the skilled stream of the migration program in generating economic growth.
